Regional Discussions: UN ECE region and UN ESCAP region

Tuesday, 2 May 2006, 3:00-6:00
Conference Room 4

Intervention: Mr. Chairman, on behalf of the Children and Youth Caucus, I would like to comment on CSR and the ILO core conventions that Mr. Marley mentioned earlier. My comment is about Fair Trade, which is an innovative, market-based approach to sustainable development.

The Youth Caucus has many examples where youth organizations, for example in Sweden and the UK, have initiated successful Fair Trade purchasing programs.

Fair Trade shows consumers that it is easy to think global and act local. Fair Trade also shows businesses that CSR, Corporate Social Responsibility, and respect for the ILO core conventions are of interest for consumers. It shows that consumers do care about Human Rights and the Rights of the Child.

Mr. Chairman, youth organizations are good resources that can cooperate with governments when education the public about Fair Trade, the ILO core conventions and especially the abolition of child labor.

Thank you.

Presented by Karin Wallin (Sweden) from the Children and Youth chair.
